| Description: |
Officers in the Carberry District
located a tree stand on crown land set
up for archery hunting. Within bow range
there was grain and salt placed as bait
for attracting deer.
The next morning Officers returned to
the area and discovered an archery
hunter from Wisconsin on the stand.
Further investigation revealed two more
stands in the area also with bait and
being used by two more Wisconsin USA
hunters. The hunters stated they had
been guided to the stands in the dark by
their guide and outfitter and that this
was the fist day they had been hunting
in Manitoba.
Later that morning the guide/outfitter
arrived to pick up the hunters and was
questioned by the Officers.
A search warrant was executed for the
property of the outfitter on November 1,
2006. Officers located containers of
grain and salt and 12 tree stands set up
in different locations on the property
all of which had bait for deer nearby.
There were also food plots for
attracting deer to the stand locations.
The guide/outfitter was charged with 4
counts of placing bait and 3 counts of
as a guide assisting/directing another
person to commit an offence.
On January 22, 2007 he plead guilty to
one count of placing a bait and to one
count of assisting/directing a person to
commit an offence. He received $1100 in
fines.
The remaining charges were stayed as
part of the plea bargain. All seizures
were forfeited. On March 27, 2007 his
guiding license was cancelled and
suspended for four years. |
