| Description: |
The Manitoba Conservation Riverton
District office received complaints
about JOHANNSON, Eirikur Ingulfur of the
Riverton area setting domestic fishing
nets on Lake Winnipeg a few days before
the commercial fishing season opened.
The information also suggested that
JOHANNSON sold his catch to the
Freshwater Fish Marketing Corporation
(FFMC).Officers had received similar
information in previous years therefore
a plan was implemented to end the
alleged illegal activity.
Officers went out on Lake Winnipeg on
May 24th, 2005, the day before the
commercial fishing season opened, and
saw JOHANNSON on the lake at the south
end of Hecla Island near a domestic
fishing net. JOHANNSON was asked if it
was his net and if he had his treaty
number and name marked on the buoys?
JOHANNSON said “yes”. When checked by
officers the markers and buoys were not
properly marked with JOHANNSON’S name.
The nets and buoys were marked by
officers as well as 9 fish that were
caught in the net.
On May 25th, 2005, opening day of the
south basin commercial fishing season.
Officers began surveillance on JOHANNSON
to see if he would try to sell the
marked fish to FFMC. The nets were
checked at 1:00pm and the buoy markers
had been changed to a second accused,
DENEKA, Grant Steve. The buoys were
marked with commercial fishing number
1780 on the flag of the buoy.
Officers observed the two accused return
off the lake and drive to the Riverton
FFMC. At 6:15pm on May 25th, 2005
officers entered Riverton FFMC and saw
JOHANNSON and DENEKA dressing fish in an
attempt to sell their catch of the day.
The accused were notified of the
offences committed and the fish were
seized. The marked nets and buoys were
seized from the lake including the
domestic treaty buoys.
Deneka, Grant Steve pled guilty to
Commercial Fish during closed season for
which he received a fine of $1,202.00.
Johannson, Eirikur Ingulfur pled guilty
to Commercial fish during closed season.
He received a $500 fine. |
