| Description: |
On October 18, 2006 officers had
occasion to observe a goose hunting
party of 5 persons in a field west of
Petersfield. Members of this party had
shot and dropped 2 Canada Geese, 1
within 40 metres of the blinds while the
other was approximately 100 metres from
the blinds.
It wasn't until 15 minutes later that 3
persons left their blinds to retrieve
the birds. The nearest bird appeared
dead but the other began running away
from the person as he approached. This
person shot the goose when he got within
range.
Federal Regulations require hunters to
immediately retrieve a dead or wounded
migratory bird. In this case at least
15 minutes had passed before anyone
attempted to retrieve the dead and
injured birds.
Convicted of the offence were Robert
Deadrick and James HARMS of Esko,
Minnesota. They each received the
specified penalty of $167 plus a 1 year
suspension of game bird hunting
privileges in Manitoba. |
