Hunting on private land without permission |
| |
| Description: |
Roblin officers received a complaint
from a landowner indicating that he
had observed a vehicle in his alfalfa
field at around dusk and heard a rifle
shot originating from the vehicle.
This occurred north of Boggy Creek,
MB. The landowner gave a short chase
and managed to get the license plate
number of the vehicle. This particular
piece of land is private and no
hunting is allowed. A statement was
taken from the landowner but he did
not know the driver or passenger of
the vehicle or even who fired the
shot.
The next day a small buck was found
nearby but most of it had been eaten
by animals. The vehicle was registered
to a company out of Montreal, Quebec.
After numerous phone calls officers
managed to ascertain that the vehicle
was leased to one of its employees out
of Flin Flon, Manitoba. The leasee was
then contacted but denied
involvement. He did drop the name of
another person who had borrowed that
truck that week for deer hunting. With
the help of Cranberry Portage
officers, statements were obtained by
the leasee and eventually the shooter.
Lance BURWASH of Flin Flon, Manitoba
was charged under The Wildlife Act for
hunting on private land without
permission. He pleaded guilty with
explanation to the charge. The
magistrate had the fined reduced to
$85.00. The landowner was quite
pleased regardless of the penalty.
