| Description: |
NROs conducting winter angler checks of
the Red River and Lake Winnipeg had
occasion to engage in a pursuit of 2
snowmobiles whose drivers were trying to
escape apprehension. Officers were able
to obtain the licence numbers of both
snowmobiles then terminated the pursuit.
The officers also recovered the seat of
one snowmobile. The seat came off the
snowmobile as the driver was trying to
evade the officers. A query of the
licence numbers brought the officers to
Portage la Prairie approximately 3 weeks
later. The snowmobile with the missing
seat now had a new replacement seat. On
the date of the offence, the owner of
the snowmobile had apparently lent his
machine to his brother. The brother
alleged that he had lost the seat while
trailering the sled near Stonewall, MB.
When officers spoke with the alleged
snowmobile operator, he stated that
while he was angling on Lake Winnipeg,
an unknown man had walked up to the
sled, started it and took off with it.
This man allegedly returned about 3
hours later. Michael WEBB later
admitted that he had not been truthful
and that he had been the driver of the
snowmobile. The other driver was
identified as Timothy ZERKEE also of
Portage la Prairie. Both WEBB and
ZERKEE were charged and received fines
of $164. WEBB apparently paid over $400
to replace the snowmobile seat. |
