Item: Kill a wild animal at time of year prohibited and possess illegally taken wildlife.
Description: Boissevain Natural Resource Officers received a TIP call regarding an illegal hunting activity in progress near Cartwright, Manitoba. The caller reported that the occupant of a white Chevrolet extended cab truck shot a deer with a high powered rifle on private property and was followed back to his residence. NROs and RCMP arrived at the residence at 9:00pm and located the suspect truck. Although the truck had just been washed, fresh blood was observed in the truck box area. One high powered rifle cartridge was observed, through the window, in between the front seats. The suspect was interviewed by NROs. The whitetail deer and Remington 22-250 rifle were recovered and seized. The accused, Daniel Hofer, was charged with killing a wild animal at time of year prohibited and possessing illegally taken wildlife. He was convicted of both offences and paid a fine of $1187.00. The seized deer was cut/wrapped and donated to the food bank. This type of illegal activity and disregard for the hunting laws and seasons is very serious and dangerous.
