| Description: |
Boissevain Natural Resource Officers
received a call regarding poaching
activity in progress, in the Turtle
Mountain Provincial Park. The caller
reported that three persons were
encountered on the West Main Road which
is within the Provincial Park. One of
the subjects was observed pointing a
firearm at a young bull moose.
At 8:45am, NROs arrived at the area and
encountered three Treaty persons in
possession of a dead bull moose on the
side of the West Main Road.
It is illegal to hunt, discharge or
possess a loaded firearm within 300
meters of the public roads in the park.
The moose was located approximately 23
meters from the road.
The accused, Gregory Bone, claimed
responsibility for killing the moose
within the restricted area. He was
subsequently charged for hunting within
300 meters of an improvement in a
provincial park and possessing an
illegally taken animal. The moose was
seized.
The accused was aware of the 300 meter
park road hunting restriction and all
the roads into the park are clearly
posted with this information.
Provincial Parks are multi-use areas and
as such hunters are required to use
firearms in a safe manner.
Gregory Bone was convicted of possessing
illegally taken wildlife and hunting
within the 300 meter restriction. He
received a fine of $1050. Both fines
were reduced by the court with an
explanation from the accused.
The moose was cut and wrapped by park
staff and donated to the Boissevain food
bank.
