Description: Boissevain Natural Resource Officers conducted a decoy moose operation to curb poaching activity in the Turtle Mountain Provincial Park. During the early evening, a white van approached the decoy site. The van had just been checked by an NRO unit and the four occupants were reminded of the restriction regarding hunting from the park roads. Upon observing the decoy, their vehicle stopped abruptly. Two males exited the vehicle with high powered rifles and ran back approximately 20 meters, toward an opening in the bush. The two individuals both fired four rounds at the decoy. The vehicle the suspects were traveling in backed up to their location and one male got into the front passenger side of the van with his rifle. The other suspect ran into the wooded area to the north of the road with his rifle. The suspect vehicle was stopped by the NRO units as it attempted to flee. Once the suspect vehicle was stopped and firearms secured an NRO unit came back to the decoy location and using the vehicle public address system, ordered the second suspect to come out to the road. After several demands to come out to the road, the suspect finally did come out. The NRO observers found the suspect's rifle hidden in the wooded area. Both accused, Ervin Delaronde and Darryl Contois, were subsequently charged for discharging a firearm within 300 meters of the park road and the recovered rifle was seized. The serial number and information was obtained from Ervin Delaronde’s firearm and it was returned. It is illegal to discharge or possess a loaded firearm within 300 meters of a public road in a Provincial Park. All access roads into the park are clearly posted with this safety regulation. The park is a multi-use area and it is very dangerous to hunt near the public roads and built-up areas. Ervin Delorande and Darryl Contois were convicted and received $278.00 fines.
