| Description: |
A Selkirk NRO and Central Region
Director were conducting a migratory
game bird compliance patrol on opening
day of the non-resident migratory game
bird hunting season.
They observed decoys and hunters in a
field. Upon approaching the hunters,
they observed an injured goose lying in
the vehicle trail leading to the
hunters' blind. This goose was
approximately 200 meters from the hunters.
The officer retrieved the goose and
approached the hunters. The officer
could see another injured live goose in
amongst the hunters' decoys. As he
approached this goose, the officer
observed an area approximately 2 meters
in diameter that had been beaten down by
this goose's wings. This indicated to
the officer that the goose had been
alive for quite some time.
As the officer was writing Offence
Notices for the hunters, the Regional
Director continued to search the area.
he found another injured and unretrieved
goose. This made 3 in total.
Tom Robert Nietzke of Detroit Lakes, MN,
Thomas Clair Conley of ON were charged
with failing to immediately retrieve an
injured or crippled migratory game bird.
They pleaded guilty to the offence near
the end of October, 2008. They were
fined $340 and suspended from hunting
migratory game birds in Canada for one year. |
