Hunting on private land without permission. |

| Description: |
During the general deer season of
November 2006, Selkirk officers had
occasion to respond to a complaint of
several "hunters" on private land
without the landowner's permission.
The investigation led to charges being
laid against 4 men. One man, Robert
Johannesen of Balmoral had apparently
wounded a "spiker" buck during the late
evening of a hunt. He had tracked it
over several properties when he gave up
for the night. He contacted one
landowner for permission to pursue his
"buck" deer the next day. Permission
was granted to him.
The next day, Robert Johannesen
accompanied by Randolf Johannesen, Brent
Johannesen and William Gibson entered
upon the one property and at least 3
others in pursuit of the "buck" deer.
Officers were called when one of the
accused (Robert Johannesen) was observed
on a property for which he did not have
permission to hunt.
Upon arrival, the officers observed
Robert Johannesen and William Gibson
field dressing a doe. Randolf and Brent
Johannesen were in the bush chasing
another wounded deer. Shortly
thereafter, the officers observed
Randolph and Brent in possession of
another doe that they had taken on the
properties.
In essence, one person was granted
permission to hunt a wounded "buck" deer
on one property. Four persons entered
upon that property and 3 others where
they had no permission at all. They did
not kill the wounded buck; instead
shooting 2 does.
The officers seized the 2 does. Robert
Johannesen pleaded guilty to hunting on
private land without permission. He was
assessed the $400 fine.
The other 3 men pleaded not guilty. A
plea bargain with the Crown resulted in
each person paying $200 to the Teulon
Game and Fish Association Junior Rifle
Club. Their charges were stayed. Both
deer were forfeited to the Crown. |
